Silicone sealant is a must for construction joint sealing, do you know how to apply silicone sealant smoothly and professionally like a pro? We are going to show how to apply silicone sealant to kitchen sink with gun step by step. Let’s get started. This method is also applicable for home improvement like bathroom, shower, bathtub, kitchen faucet.
Before you start you will need to prepare the things below, Sharp knife Anti mold silicone sealant Caulking gun Masking tape (a low tack tape or an insulating tape) Scraper tools or Gloves (if you smooth out the silicone caulk by finger) Wet wipes Clean rigs It will take 20-40mintues to finished the caulking job.
Step 1 Remove the joint surface with a solvent (such as xylene, butanone) and clean and dry with rag. Remove moisture, grease, dust and other pollutants on the surface of the joint. When appropriate, use a solvent (such as xylene, butanone) to clean the surface, and then wipe off all residues with a clean rag to make it fully clean and dry. Here is step instruction of remove silicone sealant, just have a look if you need it.
Step 2 Cover surfaces near the joint with masking tape. To ensure perfect and neat working lines of the seal Using of where you want to caulk and leave about a quarter of an inch or more depending on how much you have to cover up just pick your space and tape both sides.
Step 3 Open silicone sealant and cut silicone nozzle at 45 degree angle. Cut the tips of the silicone sealant, install the nozzle tube, and then cut it at a 45° angle according to the size of the caulking
Step 4 Install silicone sealant into the caulking gun and apply the caulking work along the gap. Install silicone sealant to the caulking gun, and keep the angle of 45° to press out the silicone sealant along the gap to ensure that the silicone caulk is in close contact with the surface of the substrate. During the caulking, hold the caulking gun with one hand and squeeze with the other, so that the silicone sealant come out is more stable. When the seam width is greater than 15 mm, it is necessary to apply silicone sealant repeatedly.
Step 5 Clean excess silicone off and smooth out the joint of silicone with scraper tools and pull the masking tape off. After caulking, trim the surface with a scraper tool to remove excess silicone, and smooth out the silicone caulk, then tear off the tape carefully. If there is any stain, use a damp rig to remove it. We suggest remove excess silicone every few inches and you don’t ever have to go back to fix fill or clean anything it’s one time 30 second hit and move on.Otherwise silicone will be difficult to clean up once cured.
Step 6 Wait 24 hours for the silicone sealant to fully cure The surface of the silicone sealant is vulcanized after 10 minutes at room temperature, and it takes 24 hours or more to fully vulcanize, depending on the thickness of the silicone and the temperature and humidity of the environment.
We're now finished with the silicone we've applied it to every joint in the kitchen sink and we hope this article has helped.
Tips: 1. Please keep door and window opening when caulking 2. When applying sealant, pushing the caulking gun rather than pulling it gives a better finish. The problem with pulling is that it's easy to leave thin gaps through which water can seep. By pushing, you accumulate sealant so there's less opportunity for gaps. 3. Do NOT use any spray water when applying silicone, so as not to affect the adhesion of the sealant 4. We recommended that you use alcohol-type sealant. It emits alcohol substances during the curing process, which is what we commonly call alcohol substances. It is harmless to the human body and is a truly healthy and environmentally friendly product. FAQ Q: How long do you leave masking tape on silicone? A: Pull the tape off straight after smoothing it with the smoothing tool. Q: How long does silicone sealant take to dry? A:Silicone sealant is vulcanized after 10 minutes at room temperature, and it takes 24 hours to fully cured. The curing of silicone sealants is limited by the environment. Generally speaking, normal construction can be carried out in the range of 5~40°C. When the surface temperature of the substrate is higher than 50°C, please stop the construction. If the construction is continued at this temperature, the curing speed will be accelerated, but at the same time, the small molecular products cannot be discharged in time, forming bubbles. If the temperature is too low, the curing speed will slow down, which may cause shrinkage and deformation of the adhesive layer. Q: What happens if silicone sealant gets wet before it cures? A: Silicone sealant can stick to wet surfaces, but the viscosity will be affected by water, so the viscosity and adhesion of silicone sealant will be affected to a certain extent. Q: How do you clean fresh silicone sealant? A: Before the silicone sealant is cured, wipe it off with a cloth or paper towel Q: Can silicone be applied to a wet surface? A: Water and silicone don’t go together. If you apply silicone over wet base, it won’t make positive seal and will eventually separate from the surface Q: How to get rid of silicone sealant smell? A: Open the windows to ventilate that is the most effective way; Choose environmentally friendly silicone sealant,JOINTAS is a leading sealant manufacturer, and our sealants have passed environmental protection certification and are trustworthy. Q: How to store silicone sealant after use? A: Use cling film between nozzle and tube and at end of nozzle before screwing on the final and silicone should be stored in a cool, dry place, below 30℃
